Blogs from Andrew Bray about the bigger context of what BREAZE is working on. Climate change, peak oil, food security. What do these issues require of us, how are we planning to tackle them and what's happening right now to get us where we want to be.

BREAZE members rallied in Ballarat today to show Ted Baillieu their support for renewable energy and express their concerns about his recent changes to wind farms and solar feed in tariffs.
In what can only be described as Ballarat's finest appalling weather, over fifty people gathered to hear Simon Reid speak on the future of solar and yours truly on the loss for Ballarat of jobs and economic development from the new wind farm laws.
The new wind laws will deprive Ballarat of a new growth industry that should be creating ongoing jobs in parts manufacture, servicing and training.

Last week's decision to stop the wind energy industry and cut the Victorian solar feed-in tariff mean that both solar and wind are under threat in NSW and Vic.
The new feed-in tariff arrangements mean new installations of solar power could be subsidising coal power at peak times in Victoria. And in NSW nearly 4000 jobs in the solar industry could be lost by the end of the year.
On the wind front, Premier Baillieu's new laws mean a single resident can stop a wind farm within 2km of their house but a primary school in Anglesea can't stop a coal mine being extended to within 800m of the school. A couple of weeks ago Barry O'Farrell said if he had his way there would not be another wind turbine constructed in NSW.
This move to block or slow down new wind and solar projects in NSW and Victoria is deeply concerning.

The Lord Monckton circus came to Ballarat last week with its pantomime of villians (Al Gore, the ABC - everybody hiss!), tirade against the corruption of climate scientists and 90 minute litany of misquotations and distortions. A truly challenging night.
Here is my response to the night, published in The Courier last Thursday.
Someone I respect once told me “you’re entitled to your own opinions but you can’t have your own facts.”
This is particularly true in discussions about climate change, where scientific fact is so regularly trumped by political opinion. It’s like politics is the schoolyard bully who takes the wimpy science kid behind the bike shed every lunch time for a beating.

To kick off a bit of a conversation, I've included our media release on the carbon price below.
What do you think about the carbon price package? Are you satisfied its a good step in dealing with climate change? Got any concerns? Happy with BREAZE's position?
Let us know your thoughts below...

Members of BREAZE, Moorabool Environment Group and Sustainable Hepburn Association and Australian Youth Climate Coalition met with our local MP, Catherine King today. We presented her with a report on the almost 800 face to face conversations our volunteers had with local residents on renewable energy as part of the 100% Renewables campaign.
She was very appreciative of the countless hours of work we had done speaking with the community about renewable energy and other issues including the price on pollution.
